Strao 2025 Zeeland!

During the period February-March, straô is driven in six villages on the island of Schouwen: Burgh-Haamstede, Ellemeet, Scharendijke, Serooskerke, Renesse and Noordwelle.

Straô, also called Straô ries, is recognised as intangible heritage of the Netherlands and attracts many visitors every year. This ritual is unique in the Netherlands and offers a glimpse into your Zealand culture. The ritual on the beach and the festivities in the villages create a cosy atmosphere. You can enjoy the festivities, taste local dishes and experience the ritual up close.

In the morning, riders with decorated work horses gather in the village and march in procession to the beach, led by a horn blower. There, they symbolically wash their horses' legs in seawater. The horses and riders in traditional costumes add a historical touch to the ritual. The event ends with a competition for the most beautiful decorations and best-dressed riders.
