Tips for a holiday with a dog
Dogs are allowed on the beaches on a leash between 1 May and 1 October between 10:00 and 19:00. Outside this period, dogs are allowed both loose and leashed.
Remember to bring your own dog poop bag!
Schelphoek Serooskerke
Along the Oosterschelde, you can take a lovely walk along the old sea dyke from the caisson at the Schelphoek (near Serooskerke on Schouwen-Duiveland). Your dog can run free as the dyke is fenced off with sheep netting. You can also cross the dyke at the caisson and walk along the creek where there is also an off-leash area. Take the Schelphoek exit from the N59 between Zierikzee and Burgh-Haamstede. In the eastern part of the Schelphoek forest near Serooskerke (Schouwen-Duiveland), dogs are also allowed to run loose.
Grevelingen
Off-leash area along the Grevelingen (Europe's largest saltwater lake). The Grevelingenstrand recreation area on the Grevelingendam has a dog walking area at the very end of the area.
Running loose: From October to April, the entire area is used as a dog walking area. On a leash: Between Easter and the autumn holidays, the restriction applies only to that stretch.
Westerschouwen beach Burgh-Haamstede
On the western tip of Schouwen-Duiveland, on the beach at Burgh-Haamstede, dogs are allowed to run loose at certain times.
Running loose: From 6pm to 10am
On a leash: Between Whitsuntide and 1 September, the dog must be on a leash from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
Note: Due to the presence of rare birds, there is an exception at Verklikker beach. There, from 1 April to 15 September, a leash ban applies all day and night. Your dog is also welcome on the beach during the summer months, but on a leash. Parking is paid on the Strandweg at one of the beach entrances. From the car park just past house number 49, you can walk along the Vuurtorenpad to the beach in a few minutes. Dogs must be leashed in the dunes.
Brouwersdam-South
Running free: On the south side of Brouwersdam, on the North Sea side, there is a curved stretch of beach where dogs are allowed to run free and swim between 15 October and 15 May.
On a leash: after 15 May, dogs must be kept on a leash between 10:00 and 19:00, but after that they may run free again.
You can park (for free) at the car park along the west side of the beginning of Brouwersdam (Grevelingenlaan). From here, you can walk straight onto the beach. Dogs are welcome at Strandpaviljoen Beachclub Perry's, provided they are kept on a leash.
Dog information Boswachterij Westerschouwen
In Boswachterij Westerschouwen, dogs are allowed to run free on the strip behind the camping grounds between the forest edge and the bridle path at Adriaan van der Weijdeweg in Westenschouwen.
Bicycle trailer or cargo bike for the dog
If you want to fully explore the island, we recommend renting a cargo bike or bicycle trailer from Fietsverhuur Zeeland! This way, you can see and experience even more together with your four-legged friend.
